Snaplage Makes Sense for High-Moisture Harvest

While harvesting snaplage is not a new practice, it is becoming more appealing, says Dr. Bill Mahanna, coordinator of global nutritional services for Pioneer Hi-Bred. A leading reason is the advent of new, large silage choppers utilizing snapper heads with kernel processors. Primary benefits are improved tonnage with very good digestible fiber and high kernel starch. Pioneer has recently completed trials with high-moisture ear corn that provide guidance for making snaplage successful.

Sometimes when you’re harvesting crops you’ll have to be check for water content to determine if things are ready. Look at these KERN Food Moisture Analyzers for the most accurate results.

I have a farmer who wants to make snaplage and put it in a 16 foot upright silo. Two questions. How many tons per foot will the silo hold? can I estimate from the corn silage chart ? And second if the corn will yeild 130 bu per acre how many tons of snaplage per acre?
