Finished your work-out? Make sure to grab a glass of lowfat chocolate milk, the “natural” way to help you refuel and replenish your body after strenuous exercise. The “Refuel America” program aims to educate Americans that no matter what sport they play, lowfat chocolate milk is an easy, effective and cost-efficient way to refuel the body after a tough workout.
Eight-time speed skating medalist Apolo Anton Ohno and USA Basketball Men’s National Team member Chris Bosh are the latest celebrities to don a Milk Mustache and join some of America’s most-loved and top-performing athletes to announce a new campaign highlighting the importance of the two-hour recovery window after they have left the court, training and locker rooms.
Refueling after exercise, especially during the two-hour recovery window, is key in helping the body recover and prepare for the next workout or competition. And, when it comes to recovery, lowfat chocolate milk offers post-exercise benefits. It includes the right mix of protein and carbohydrates to repair and refuel exhausted muscles, plus fluids and electrolytes to rehydrate and help replenish what’s lost in sweat. With nine essential nutrients, milk contains key vitamins and minerals your body needs every day.
“The trainers, coaches and athletes that I work with agree that the two hours after exercise is a crucial part of training to help your body recover and refuel,” said speed skating superstar Apolo Ohno. “My races are often right after one another, so recovery is essential. I grab a lowfat chocolate milk to help me get fuel and nutrients back into my body quickly to help me refuel for the next race.”
USA Basketball Men’s National Team member Chris Bosh also is letting fans know that chocolate milk helps keep him at the top of his game. “Lowfat chocolate milk is an important part of my recovery plan – plus it tastes great,” he said. “I’m excited to be part of this important campaign to help teach athletes the importance of fitness and nutrition, and how drinking chocolate milk can help them refuel after exercise.”
Chocolate milk is making star appearances in locker rooms around the country as more athletes and top level coaches discover the benefits of refueling with chocolate milk after training. Experts agree that the two-hour window after exercise is an important, yet often neglected, part of a fitness routine. Active bodies need the right mix of nutrients and fluids to properly recover and get back in the game.
“What’s so great about lowfat chocolate milk is that it delivers the things the body really needs to recover – like carbs, high-quality protein, fluids and electrolytes – with the bonus of other nutrients like bone-strengthening vitamin D and calcium, all in a great-tasting, affordable drink that’s probably already in your refrigerator,” said nationally-recognized certified sports dietitian Tara Gidus, RD, who works with some of the nation’s top athletes.
A growing body of research supports chocolate milk’s recovery benefits. Most recently, a series of four studies presented at the American College of Sports Medicine suggests that drinking lowfat or fat free chocolate milk after exercise can help the body retain, replenish and rebuild muscle to help your body refuel and could even help prepare muscles to perform better in a subsequent bout of exercise.
To educate teen athletes on the role of chocolate milk in refueling their bodies after exercise and reward them for choosing milk, teens can join the “Refuel & Reward” program which provides them with a “virtual personal trainer” via their mobile devices. By texting REFUEL to 80800, teens will receive tips from world-class athletes and opportunities to win cool prizes including autographed gear.
The new program will provide school coaches with information and materials to help educate their teams about the benefits of post-exercise nutrition. Coaches, teachers, students and parents can nominate secondary schools that refuel their athletes with chocolate milk for a chance to receive one of ten $1,000 Refuel Grants to help them further efforts to teach the benefits of exercise and nutrition.

Milk can help you Shine, Replenish and Build. But, drinking milk can also help you make a difference. The folks at Body By Milk have partnered with Shawn Johnson, Deron Williams and Albert Pujols for a unique contest – the winning celeb will have the chance to implement a community project that is special to them.
Shine: Create a place to inspire kids to learn
Replenish: Build a safe place where kids can be active
Build: Give the gift of a home to a family in need
I admit to being a St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. Not a fanatic but a fan. Albert Pujols has been one of my favorite players in recent history and I’m glad to see him wearing the mustache.
They may represent completely different sports, but when it comes to the health and fitness of America’s youth, these athletes play on the same team. Today, MVP baseball slugger Albert Pujols joins fellow Milk Mustache athletes, NBA All-Star and Utah Jazz point guard Deron Williams and gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson, as part of the Milk Mustache “Dream Team” to inspire teens to “Drink Milk for a Change.” They know that drinking milk can help make a difference – for their bodies and now through a special community service opportunity in their world.
Lowfat milk has nine essential nutrients, including calcium and vitamin D for strong bones and protein for lean muscle. Studies suggest being active, eating right and drinking three glasses of fat free or lowfat milk each day may help maintain a healthy weight.
Pujols ad, which reads, “Want muscle? got milk?” reinforces the importance of milk’s high quality protein. Along with regular exercise, protein can help build and maintain lean muscle – essential for athletes like Pujols to perform their best on the field.
“For me, I drink lowfat chocolate milk after a long day on the field,” said Pujols, who was on hand to unveil his new ad at the St. Louis Cardinals spring training facility in Jupiter, Fla. “It’s a natural source of protein plus it has carbs so it helps me rebuild and refuel my tired muscles after being active. It’s an important part of my recovery routine to get ready for the next nine innings, season after season.”
Her ad “The taste of fame” reads: “Center stage, silver screen, joyful new mom. How do I keep this show on the road? Milk. Its wholesome goodness helps make my family strong at every stage. Talk about a powerful performance.”
With her high-powered soulful style, 28-year-old Jennifer Hudson has already achieved feats that are reserved for most young signers’ dreams. The former “American Idol” contestant nabbed a much-deserved Academy Award for her unforgettable role as “Effie” in the 2006 movie adaptation of the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls” and went on to appear in the 2008 summer box office hit “Sex in the City.” Hudson’s next film will be “Winnie,” based on the life of Winnie Mandela which she will shoot in South Africa this summer.
Jennifer has won numerous awards, including a Grammy for her self-titled debut album, which spawned the hit single “Spotlight.” Her second album will be released in May 2010.
In August 2009, Jennifer started signing a new tune – lullabies – after giving birth to her son David Daniel Otunga Jr., with fiancé David Otunga.

Have you seen those cool commercials for the new campaign, Fuel Up to Play 60, where football players are running and playing with school kids? They are aimed to get kids moving and staying fueled for play with a healthy, balanced diet. Wisconsin Ag Connection just released an article about this program. Check it out.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has joined a campaign to fight and defeat childhood obesity in cooperation with the NFL, National Dairy Council, multiple health organizations and several major corporations. The campaign, known as Fuel Up to Play 60, is funded with an initial private sector financial commitment of $250 million over five years by America’s Dairy Farmers. Funding is expected to grow as government, business, communities and families join this effort to improve nutrient-rich food choices and achieve 60 minutes of physical activity each day among children. More than 58,000, or 60 percent, of the nation’s 96,000 private and public schools are currently enrolled in Fuel Up to Play 60.
The new program will give away hundreds of thousands of gallons of milk – the equivalent of more than three million servings – to help raise awareness of the important role milk plays in building strong families. Events are scheduled from coast-to-coast to give out the gallons and families can register to win a year’s free supply of milk.
The “Great Gallon Give” will also make it possible to help families in need by passing a virtual gallon of milk to friends on Facebook. For every virtual gallon passed, $1 will go to Feeding America, up to $100,000. Feeding America is the country’s largest network of food banks that serves more than 25 million people facing hunger in this country. In addition, milk processors will be donating thousands of real gallons of milk to local food banks in the Feeding America network.
“We want to salute moms for all they do to help build strong families,” said Vivien Godfrey, CEO of the Milk Processor Education Program. “When you sit down to a meal together, you’re doing something good for your family. When you set the table with milk, you are providing your family with one of the most nourishing choices possible.”
Visit the website to find out if the Great Gallon Give is coming to your town. Local events are planned for 20 markets from coast-to-coast. In total, more than 200,000 gallons of milk will be distributed. While there, you can register for a chance to win a year’s worth of free milk. The first 125,000 people to enter the contest will receive a downloadable coupon for free milk with purchase.

Some schools and activist groups are looking to remove lowfat chocolate milk from cafeterias, but this actually could do more nutritional harm than good, says a new effort, Raise Your Hand For Chocolate Milk! Chocolate milk is the most popular milk choice in schools and kids will drink less milk (and get fewer nutrients) if it’s taken away. This website is working to educate schools and families about the importance of milk in the diet. Here are the five listed reasons why milk rocks! This campaign is being sponsored by the National Dairy Council and Got Milk? I’m raising my hand for chocolate milk! Are you?
1. Milk provides nutrients essential for good health and kids will drink more when it’s flavored.
2. Flavored milk contains the same nine essential nutrients as white milk and is a healthful alternative to soft drinks.
3. Drinking lowfat or fat free white or flavored milk helps kids get the 3 daily servings of milk recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and provides three of the five “nutrients of concern” that children do not get enough of – calcium, potassium and magnesium as well as vitamin D.
4. Children who drink flavored milk meet more of their nutrient needs; do not consume more added sugar, fat or calories; and are not heavier than non-milk drinkers.
5. Lowfat chocolate milk is the most popular milk choice in schools and kids drink less milk (and get fewer nutrients) if it’s taken away.
